Autumn Skip Hire in Stoke-on-Trent – Getting Ahead of Winter

Autumn is the busiest time of year for skip hire – here’s why
Once the summer’s over and the schools are back, the phone starts ringing. Autumn is genuinely our busiest few weeks of the year for domestic skip hire in Stoke-on-Trent — and it’s not hard to see why. The garden’s had a full season to grow wild, the shed’s a state after months of BBQs and paddling pools, and there’s that familiar feeling of wanting the house sorted before the clocks change and the weather turns.
Whether you’re clearing the garden, tackling that garage that’s been on the to-do list since last winter, or getting a spare room ready for Christmas visitors, this is the time of year to book a skip in.
What are people usually clearing in autumn?
The garden does most of the heavy lifting. Hedges get their last big cut of the year, borders get dug over, and everything that’s been quietly dying since August finally gets pulled up. Add in leaves, old bedding plants, hedge trimmings and any woody bits, and even a small garden can fill a 3-yard skip in a weekend.
The shed and garage come next. Broken garden furniture, snapped kids’ toys, the old lawnmower that hasn’t started since 2024 — all the stuff that’s been “we’ll deal with that at some point” now needs to go if you want any hope of parking indoors this winter.
Inside the house, autumn is when a lot of people tackle small refits — a bathroom refresh, a new kitchen worktop, or the built-in wardrobes coming out. Skips make the difference between a project that runs smoothly and one that ends up with rubble in the hall for a fortnight.
Getting ahead of winter – the sensible stuff
There’s another good reason to book a skip now: winter jobs are much cheaper and easier if you clear the ground first.
- Roof and gutter work is far easier when there aren’t dead leaves and moss piled up everywhere. Clear the garden of anything the ladder might land on before the wet weather comes.
- Loft clearances are a classic autumn job — turfing out anything you’ve been meaning to sort before the loft insulation gets checked or the Christmas tree comes down.
- Driveway and drainage tidying — old paving slabs, cracked kerb edging, and the collapsing edge of the flowerbed can all go in one hit.
Sorting this stuff in September or October means you’re not doing it in horizontal rain in January.
Which skip size do you actually need?
Rough guide for autumn jobs:
- 2-yard mini skip — small garden clear-outs, one room’s worth of old furniture, a couple of shed loads. Fits neatly on any driveway.
- 3-yard mini skip — bigger gardens, small bathroom refits, general household decluttering. Our most popular size for autumn.
- 4-yard midi skip — proper garden overhaul, garage clearance, or a modest kitchen strip-out. The drop door makes wheelbarrow loading much easier.
- 8-yard builders’ skip — heavier loads like rubble, patio slabs, or a full property clearance. Best if you’ve got room on a driveway.
Not sure? A 3-yard is where most autumn hires land — plenty of room without paying for space you won’t use.
Booking practicalities
A couple of things worth knowing before you book:
- Driveway or road? Skips on your own driveway don’t need a permit and can be delivered same-day or next. On the road you’ll need a permit — we handle that for you, but it does add a few working days to the process, so book earlier.
- What you can’t put in: the usual list — asbestos, TVs and monitors, batteries, gas cylinders, electrical appliances, and paint tins. There’s a small surcharge for plasterboard, mattresses, sofas, carpets, tyres and fridge freezers — all clearly priced when you book online.
- Delivery times: we can normally hit next-day for driveway skips. If you need it faster, give us a call on 01782 551 222.
